Questions :
1.Lenina mentions a lot of Hypnopaedic phrases throughout the chapter. Why does keep mentioning them?

2. How is the Director in this chapter compared to the Director in the beginning of the book?

3. In first few chapters we learn about what life in the Brave New World is like, but, in chapter six we get a hint of what life in the Savage Reservation is like. What can you predict life is like in the Reservation?

  1. 1) I think she uses the hypnopaedia phrases because she wants to reassure herself of the things she is seeing that are outside of the "norm". Personally, it almost feels as though she has to say them in order to seem normal or at least like she has a good response. I think she's faking everything because she isn't who people think she is.
    2) At the beginning, he seemed very energetic. In a way, he was excited about the things going on around the place. On the other hand, when he is in his office, he's very edgy and you couldn't have expected him to have the kind of tone that he had when he was talking to Bernard. He was emotional and it showed through Bernard how, the reader and himself, were confused. I wouldn't have thought something to this extremity happened to the Director.
    3) Life in the Reservation is, to say it lightly, the opposite of how it is in the New World. They view dust as terrible and "queer" but in the Savage Reservation, it's totally okay to have it. They have babies, in the Savage Reservation, for god's sake! It's not seen everyday to have babies and lice and paint. The atmosphere is different, more liberated.

  2. 2). The Director is different from when he is first seen at the beginning of the book than how he is in Chapter 6. In the beginning you saw him as a guy that would be up for most things, strict but still very jolly and excited for what he does. In Chapter 6, he is seen very touched by a certain subject matter. A way that no one would ever expect to see him as. He was upset but towards the end, he realizes what had just happened and just went back to being the kind of Director he was in the beginning of the book.

3). Life in the reservation is very different than that of Brave New World. In the Savage Reservation, everything is basically filth. No one is afraid to be dirty, as a matter of fact, they're already dirty. They range from not having some teeth, to being completely covered in dirt. In Brave New World, they're considered to be more, "classy," I guess. They're more clean, just like the Hypnopaedic phrase "Civilization is Sterilization." They believe in so much clean, even when it comes to birth. In the reservation, they're allowed to have kids, meanwhile in Brave New World, they are decanted. They don't expect much at the Reservation.
